How Do Sunless/Self-Tanners Work?

Self-tanning formulas contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the principal tanning ingredient. Instead of increasing the skin's melanin levels, this ingredient develops a brown color on the surface of the skin, giving the appearance of a tanned complexion.

DHA acts only on the upper layer of the skin. A reaction occurs between DHA, skin proteins, and oxygen-producing brown compounds. Similar to what happens when you slice open an apple, and the apple's surface browns when exposed to oxygen.

Depending on the DHA concentration in the product and the tanner's individual skin characteristics, color takes between two and four hours to develop. It usually takes five to seven days for the DHA color to develop. As the top layer of the skin exfoliates, it fades.

How Long Will the Sunless Tan Last?

If applied accurately, your sunless tan can last five to seven days, whether from a stand-up spray unit, airbrush, or custom bronzing.

When Can You Shower After Using a Self-Tanner?

It takes about 16 hours for DHA solutions to develop fully. You will receive the best results if you can do not bathe until the day after their sunless session. If you must bathe, we advise you to wait for a minimum of 6 hours after the application.

Preparations Before Your Next Spray Tan

• Exfoliate your skin gently before your sunless spray session.
• It is recommended to wax or shave 24 hours before applying a sunless product.
• Remove any "barriers" that may prevent the sunless product from absorbing into the skin evenly. These include but are not limited to, make-up, deodorant, perfume, oils, moisturizers, and residue from hair conditioners.

Can Sunless Solution Stain Your Hair?

In most cases, the color of a person's hair won't be affected. You may also wear a hair cap while applying. Remember to pull the cap back to expose the hairline edge and tuck the cap behind your ears.

How Soon Can You Enjoy the Pool/Spa/Ocean?

We recommend you avoid the pool, ocean, or spa for the first 48 hours following your spray tan. Pools and spas that contain chlorine can accelerate the rate at which the skin exfoliates, causing the tan to fade more quickly.

Does Sunless Tan Provide Protection From UV Sun Rays?

No. Although you may get a false sense of security after a spray tan, your skin will still burn when overexposed. Applying SPF lotions or sprays during the daytime is still necessary.

Are Pregnant Women Safely Sprayed?
